On 17th and 18th November 2005, Thomson Scientific held its first certified training program for Chinese librarians. The program, conceived on 21st June 2005 is called the Golden Key Project. The two day training program was held at Wuhan University Library in central China, and attracted 40 participants from 26 universities.
The Training
Professor Yan Jinwei is library director of Wuhan University Library and one of the advisors of the Golden Key Project. Professor Jinwei started the day by welcoming the attendees and wishing the program great success. He stressed the importance of on-the-job training for university librarians and commended Thomson Scientific for recognizing the importance of customer education.
Ms. Fung Siew Tyng, director of training & technical support, Thomson Scientific Asia Pacific welcomed and thanked the attendees for participating in the first Golden Key Project. She explained the origins of the project and introduced the Thomson Scientific team.
Mr. David Liu, director of China, Thomson Scientific Asia Pacific, started the training by providing an overview of The Thomson Corporation and Thomson Scientific information solutions. He described the core value of ISI Web of KnowledgeSM as being a smart discovery tool. He also explained how it assists users in making better decision faster.
The two-day program covered the
ISI Web of Knowledge core content, and provided training on its technologies and applications. The trainers showed the trainees how to conduct advanced searches and navigate each database, analyze and manage results retrieved using various search examples, and special techniques to accelerate the discovery process. Trainers for the two-day program included Ms. Zhang Fan, associate manager of Customer Education, Ms. Faye Shi, account manager, Mr. David Liu, and Ms. Fung Siew Tyng.
Forty attendees from 26 universities participated in the program, and became certified after two days of hard work. They enjoyed the program, and 96% commented that they benefited from the training; while 86% agreed that it helped them to have a far more in-depth understanding of the unique capabilities of the Thomson Scientific information solutions. It was also a great opportunity for Thomson Scientific to listen to and interact with customers, and get a better understanding on how Thomson Scientific can further enhance its products.
About the Golden Key Project
The Golden Key Project is a certified training program that offers a systematic
course for reference librarians, training librarians and information specialists.
The aim is to equip them with the expertise they need to assist their end users.
The program also seeks to create a three-way communications channel between
Thomson Scientific, librarians and end users. The program has three basic modules:
- value, application and use of ISI Web of Knowledge
- ISI Web of Knowledge as a Smart Discovery tool
- bibliometric and scientometric study using journal and patent information
