THOMSON SCIENTIFIC KICKS-OFF A YEAR OF CELEBRATION AT ONLINE INFORMATION

Reveals 100 Reasons Why Our Resources are the Information Solutions of Choice
Founded approximately 25 years ago, Online Information has long offered Thomson businesses the chance to meet librarians who are active in the academic and corporate sectors, as well as the opportunity to assess competition, strengthen relations, and reinforce Thomson and its various brands. The three-day (November 30-December 2) international exhibition and conference is arguably the world's #1 event for information content and information management solutions.

The 2004 Online Information exhibition kicked-off of a year long celebration of excellence, which will continue through 2005 with many special events. From the moment you entered Olympia Exhibition Center, it was clear that Thomson Scientific was a major focus of the "Thomson Village", which also included Thomson Gale and Thomson Dialog. The stairs leading to Grand Hall where decorated with the "Thomson Scientific" name and stand (booth) number. And the walls were adorned with posters displaying just some of the "100 Reasons Why" the Thomson scientific solutions are the tools researchers, and information and business professionals need to make better decisions faster and achieve exception results. Once inside Grand Hall, it wasn't difficult to immediately spot the "Thomson Village," as an enormous circular sign embossed with the Thomson logo hung from the ceiling as a halo covering the Thomson stands.

The dazzling new 20' x 20' Thomson Scientific stand featured four state-of-the-art demo pods for demonstrating the suite of Thomson scientific information solutions, two glass meeting rooms for account managers to meet with customers and prospects, and a presentation area with a two foot plasma screen. The signage in the stand revealed more of the "100 Reasons" - the creative new marketing campaign launched at Online, and to be carried through 2005.

Thomson Scientific Special Events
Day one of the Thomson Scientific stand was exciting. Thirty Thomson Scientific staff members from the London and Philadelphia offices created quite a splash as they descended into Grand Hall wearing white lab coats carrying signs to lure attendees to the lavish champagne lunch at the Thomson Scientific stand. While enjoying the delicious catered delicacies, the large group of participants had an opportunity to learn about the Century of Science™ initiative that will boost Web of Science content with backfile and cited reference data and navigation from 1944 to 1900.

"This multidisciplinary bibliographic database, accessed via the ISI Web of KnowledgeSM premier research platform, already offers an extensive collection of backfiles to 1945. With the Century of Science initiative, approximately 850,000 articles from more than 200 journals - carefully selected from the published research of the first half of the 20th century - will be added," explained Keith MacGregor, executive vice president of Academic & Government Markets.

After MacGregor's presentation, attendees lined-up to meet Dr. Eugene Garfield, founder and president emeritus of ISI® and to receive an autographed copy of "The Web of Knowledge: A Festschrift in Honor of Eugene Garfield." The book is a collection of learned articles and essays by Dr. Garfield's colleagues and admirers, serving as a tribute and memorial to this information scientists vision and significant contributions. Dr. Garfield's lasting popularity and influence was evident as disappointed admirers had to be turned away, because there were not enough books for all who lined up to honor him.

Elsewhere in a separate meeting facility, Thomson Scientific sponsored a luncheon meeting to introduce current and prospective customers to Thomson ParmaSM - the powerful new research tool for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Later that evening, more than 400 invited customers and prospects socialized with Thomson Scientific staff members at an elegant reception at the famed Madam Tussauds. Guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and beverages, while delighting at the presence of the life-like wax statues of the biggest names in sports and entertainment. Thomson Scientific has become well-known for hosting lavish receptions as a way to thank its valued customers for their continued support.

On Wednesday, Thomson Pharma was in the spotlight in the stand.. The Online exhibition served as the location for the pre-launch of Thomson Pharma. While learning more about this unique information solution, the impressive group of attendees again enjoyed an array of local delectables and sparkling wine.

During his presentation, Ian Tarr, executive vice president, Pharma & Chemical Markets, explained that, "Thomson Pharma brings an indispensable information solution to the workflow of the drug discovery and development process, providing research tools that fulfill the information needs of professionals working at all stages of the drug development pipeline."

Concurrently, in another meeting facility, Thomson Scientific staff used this time to give participants an overview of the Web Citation IndexTM Project - the multidisciplinary citation index for Web-based scholarly resources. The new Web Citation Index will combine a suite of technologies developed by NEC, including "autonomous citation indexing" tools from NEC's CiteSeer environment, with the capabilities underlying ISI Web of Knowledge.

The third and final day of the exhibit was reserved for more announcements from Thomson Scientific. Like their academic and pharmaceutical counterparts, corporate customers and prospects where also treated to a champagne lunch. At the lunch, they learned about the Thomson Scientific Integrated Information Solutions (IIS). Giles Newman, sales and marketing director defined IIS as "the business-critical service from Thomson Scientific that delivers customized patent and scientific workflow solutions"

The tailored solutions enable anyone in an organization to access, share and interpret key commercial and technical information from patents and scientific research literature

"The highly experienced IIS team will work with customers every step of the way to design a solution that is tailored to their workload requirements and workflow processes, explained Newman.

In addition, lunch attendees also learned about the newly announced ability to leverage Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI®) data, along with full-text patent office data, in their intellectual property workflows through enhancements made to Delphion® productivity and analysis tools. A significant new development is the inclusion of DWPI records in Work Files - personalized lists of patents that can be shared and annotated, providing an ideal way for groups of users to collaborate on research findings.

In-Booth Presentation
At various times each day, Thomson Scientific staff delivered a number of informative in-booth presentations on topics such as the range of Thomson ResearchSoft bibliographic management tools, Thomson Pharma, the value of patent and scientific literature and standards, ISI Web of Knowledge and Web of Science®, DWPI, the Century of Science initiative, and the benefits of integrating scientific information into the workflow.

Speaking Engagements
In addition to Thomson Scientific sponsored events, Jim Testa, director of Editorial Development and Annabel Griffiths, director of CIS were featured speakers at the conference. On Wednesday, December 1st, Jim was a panelist on the topic, "Open Access and Digital Libraries: New Models for Academic Information, Provision and Consumption." His presentation, "Open Access Journals: Measuring Their Impact," focused on the findings of a recent Thomson Scientific study that revealed journals published under the Open Access (OSA) model continue to gain impact in the world of scholarly research. "Despite ranking lower as a group than those published under traditional models, the growth in the number of OA journals is impressive, and some OA journals rank near the top their respective fields," explained Testa.

Annabel Griffiths presentation focused on two of Thomson Scientific technologies: the JPharm Editorial System, which allows for the integration of diverse content during the initial stages of product development; and Thomson Pharma, as an example of content integration designed to meet customer needs. "Thomson Pharma is the paradigm of what can be achieved when high-quality content and the most progressive technologies are merged," remarked Griffiths.

Thomson Scientific Sponsorship
Thomson Scientific was one of the sponsors of Online Information Awards. As a "Headline Sponsor," Thomson Scientific chose to support the "Information Professional of the Year" award. Keith MacGregor presented the award to Karen George, senior librarian, Information Services Unit of the Home Office in recognition of her achievements in the global information industry. This was only the second year this award was presented and was a resounding success when it was first awarded in 2003. The Black Tie dinner ceremony was held at the luxurious Royal Lancaster Hotel in the Hyde Park section of London.

With the combination of striking visibility, an impressive exhibition stand, entertaining and informative special events, conference participation, and sponsorships, Thomson Scientific more than met its strategic objectives to strengthen existing relationships, scout new business, and to maintain its position as a recognized leader in providing must-have information solutions for researchers, and information and business professionals.
